You may remember that last year I gave my husband an egg incubator for his birthday. It was certainly "different" and has been fantastically useful every since. In the search for something just as original and useful, the boys and I gave him a metal detector this year. The initial enthusiasm resulted in endless potholes around the garden and in the fields as we eagerly dug down and found old nails, a horseshoe and a couple of broken spoons - not silver and certainly not jewel encrusted gold.
For ages he has been saying that the moat would be a good place to go hunting and the fantastic haul last week in Staffordshire motivated him to do just that. With the lack of rain this year the moat is once again almost dry so it makes the job a lot easier. The result? A pocket watch that is very, very rusty. Not exactly Anglo-Saxon era but fun, nonetheless.
