I forgot to take a detail shot of these two chairs which is a shame as it would shown the wrapping of the straw around the raffia, a different technique to the previous one I showed you. Not to worry, this seems to be all the rage at the moment and I have another one on the go in the workshop which should be finished this week.
When I delivered these chairs the client asked me if it was more tiring than recaning chairs. I had to think about it because compared to upholstery both techniques are a relaxing past-time. However, on reflection rempaillage is more tiring - slightly more physical but also it requires a more full-time concentration. Is the cord the correct width? Is the straw thin/wide enough? Do the different cords line up correctly? You can be caught out quite quickly as I have found to my cost!
(Incidentally I use the word cord but it is in fact wrapped raphia and not to be confused with a ready made bobbin which should be avoided!)
